Angled Headstock
Unlike cheaper designs, all Epiphones feature a 14-degree headstock that gives you more pressure at the nut and so you get more sustain with less tuning hang-ups caused by "string-tree" gadgets.
Double-Waxed Pickups
Epiphone utilizes a double vacuum waxing process that ensures optimum performance. The pickup is first placed in the specialized wax vacuuming system before the cover is put in place to ensure that the wax fully penetrates to the very center of the pickup and solidifies all parts. After the cover is placed on, it is again given a second vacuum wax bath until the unit is completely saturated with wax.

The inside, another Epiphone box by Gibson. Opening it reveals a masterpiece to the eyes, seemless paint job in cherry, easy on the eyes (no, not the girl who packed it at the plant, the guitar!). I wanted an SG for a long time, but they were so costly I grazed past it to other models for an intermediate like me getting back in the ranks. This thing looks and feels like the Gibson original, it's light, easy to hold, sits perfectly on your knee, tunes awesome, sounds great, and when I put it through my distortion pedal, I thought I was hearing Metallica... of course, then I woke up. The neck plays fast and the pickup switch gives you the ability to have the full two pickups on for rhythm, the back one on only for lead with a twangier taste, and the front one for a heavier-bassier tone. The guitar itself was no surprise. I knew that this model was inexpensive and that the hardware on it would be somewhat cheap. The pickup however tested at 12.8 ohms, that's a pretty good output. I gave the guitar a by the book pro setup with the proper gauge and ruler and it works great for me. There are plenty of video tutorials on setting up a neck and tune-o-matic bridge on you tube. I play in an AC/DC tribute band and I get good Angus tone with it, with both my tube and solid state amps. If you don't mind the hardware and care it takes this guitar will work for you on a budget. If pro gear is your thing go with the g-400. |
